This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Grounds Maintenance Specialist position for OSU-Cascades.
The Grounds Maintenance Specialist is responsible for landscape/maintenance program planning and execution at the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend Oregon. OSU-Cascades operates on a 10-acre main campus at 1500 SW Chandler Ave with one outlying facility, the Graduate and Research Center at 650 SW Columbia Ave. With future expansion already programmed for the main campus, this is an excellent opportunity to join a growing team and shape Oregon's newest university campus.
The Grounds Maintenance Specialist is responsible for landscape/maintenance program planning and performing a variety of tasks to maintain exterior spaces at OSU-Cascades' facilities. Duties include landscaping, basic horticultural work, snow removal, maintenance of storm water systems and other maintenance tasks. The Grounds Maintenance Specialist also serves as a backup to the custodial staff on a limited basis, to cover for vacation and sick leave of the regular custodial crew. During snow removal operations, the Grounds Maintenance Specialist is responsible for planning and coordinating the work of classified custodial staff that augment Grounds Maintenance for snow removal.
About OSU-Cascades: Oregon State University's branch campus in Bend, Ore., features outstanding faculty in degree programs that reflect Central Oregon's vibrant economy and abundant natural resources. Nearly 20 undergraduate majors, 30 minors and options, and four graduate programs include computer science, energy systems engineering, kinesiology, hospitality management, and tourism and outdoor leadership. OSU-Cascades landscape design and maintenance philosophy emphasizes native species and sustainable practices to cultivate and protect outdoor spaces that are beautiful, sustainable and serve as learning spaces for several of our academic and research programs.
Pesticide applicator’s license may be required based on position duties; AND Two years experience as a grounds keeper which included plant care; OR An Associate’s degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture; OR Completion of a Landscape Certification program or license in a horticultural specialty.
The ability to sufficiently understand written work orders and instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fertilizers and similar products used in grounds keeping is required. Skill in the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the Criminal History Check Requirement.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030 et seq.
Requires the ability to lift and carry grounds keeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically-powered and/or gasoline-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines. Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet (e.g., for tree trimming) or higher using powered boom or scissor lifts. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year round. Employees in this job classification are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather. The Grounds Maintenance Specialist is expected to be available to respond to emergencies and provide support for special events.
