Towson University is accepting applications for a Landscape Technician Supervisor in Facilities Management. This position will provide supervision of daily operations, routine and preventive landscape maintenance. Supervise and direct, inspect work, and oversee repairs of hardscape and above-ground stormwater management facilities. Responsible for collecting data for reports for above-ground storm water facility, maintenance and repair. Responsible to train crews in current hardscape and stormwater maintenance best practices. Employ current plant health care and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods. Be able to work autonomously while being able to schedule and work collaboratively with crews, facilities personnel, contractors and other University departments. Ensure the completion of work order assignments through computerized maintenance management system. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Perform professionally in all aspects in and outside the department
The Landscape Tech Supervisor supervises and trains technicians and grounds personnel in landscape maintenance, ornamental horticulture, and hardscape construction. Supervises and trains personnel in hardscape and above-ground stormwater facility maintenance and repairs. Determines work priorities, plans, schedules, assigns and reviews work. Oversees the inspection, evaluation and maintenance of horticultural or environmental conditions to ensure acceptable standards. Oversees hardscape and above-ground stormwater facility inspections, maintenance and repairs. Oversees Pest and disease control using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Prepares a variety of recurring and special reports reflecting departmental operations. Maintains data for the above-ground stormwater facility inventory, inspection schedules and other associated records and reports. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, database, presentations, email internet or other computer programs. Oversees and performs landscaping activities such as planning and layout of projects, hardscape, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, turf and flowers, erosion control, irrigation, mowing practices and pesticide application. Provides advice/education to other departments and grounds staff regarding potential impacts of work to the hardscape and stormwater facilities; provides input on review of projects. Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained to perform work. Ensures the operational safety and readiness of equipment; cleans equipment and performs routine maintenance and repairs. Operates/utilizes a variety of equipment or tools associated with activities. Operates landscaping equipment such as sprayers, forklifts, backhoes, power and hand tools. Ensures adherence to construction and/or site maintenance standards. General landscape and grounds keeping duties as assigned; including snow removal.
This position is an Essential Personnel position for emergencies such as snow removal, special events, storm damage, power outages and other emergencies that occur within Facilities Management. Schedule must be flexible in order to meet departmental needs.
Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in landscape construction, agronomy, or landscape maintenance work to include two years in a lead or supervisory capacity. Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy, and/or landscape maintenance; of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture; of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and pesticides. Working knowledge of landscape design and construction work. Skill in reading and interpreting landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in making field investigations. Ability to plan and program assigned projects, to organize and lead the work of assigned personnel; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and lifts; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Applicants must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
State of Maryland MDE Responsible Personnel training (formerly the Green Card) and MD Pesticide Applicator certification, Certified Maryland Tree Expert, Maryland Certified Profession Horticulturist or certification from approved Association or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire preferred. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) desirable.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation and pre-employment physical are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
$42,000 annually with University benefits including annual leave, holidays, personal and sick days; tuition remission; and excellent health, life, and retirement plans.
