With a dedicated team of more than 30 engineers, the Director of Engineering is a leadership position at NYC Parks responsible for designing and tackling engineering solutions for these beloved public spaces and structures. The work of this unit impacts neighborhood growth, public health, local commerce and sustainability initiatives throughout the five boroughs of New York City. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES •Lead an engineering team of more than 30 staff, including project managers and civil, structural, mechanical and electrical in-house engineers to tackle engineering opportunities throughout the Parks system. Determine and prioritize projects for the team’s engineering work plan and implement accordingly. Assign, schedule, track and report on the status of capital projects. •Establish and implement engineering design standards for Parks facilities and equipment. Ensure all engineering design solutions result in code compliant, efficiently constructed and maintainable systems. When directed, serve as engineer of record for documents prepared by staff engineers. •Collaborate with and support other units within the Capital Division, including Landscape Architecture, Architecture and the construction oversight units. Work with various agency stakeholders and effectively represent Parks at external meetings and reviews. •Improve upon systems for efficient production of engineering work, including tracking shop drawings, permit status, consultant payments, electronic filing structure, CAD standards compliance, etc. •Assess staff capabilities, workload and available engineering positions to manage the production capacity of the team. Effectively leverage available consultant contracts as needed, to supplement in-house staff in order to maximize resources, including the development of request proposals for services. •Assess and invest in the professional growth and needs of the engineering team, regarding continuing education seminars, licensure, etc.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 1.A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, business administration, or public administration, and five years of full-time satisfactory experience in the planning, administering or expediting of engineering design, and/or construction, or coordinating a very large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or 2.A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of experience as described in "1" above; two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or 3.Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. An accredited Master's degree in one of the disciplines described in "1" above, a law degree, or a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect or Landscape Architect may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However, all candidates must have the two years of the administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.
This position is exempt from NYC residency requirements.
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS 1.5+ years of experience supervising a staff of 15 or more. 2.Demonstrated ability to manage 30 or more projects simultaneously. 3.Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS and project management software. 4.Knowledge in the following specialized areas: sustainable/“green” design, waterfront structures, civil engineering to support landscape design, NYC infrastructure (utilities). 5.Excellent communication and organizational skills. 6.Driver license valid in New York State.
Salary: $120,000 - $128,000 plus excellent benefits
